Moneda Moves (90): "Call it the Mother's Day effect."
🌹On this special day, we’d like to wish a feliz día de las madres to our maternal figures in this world.
Today is Mother’s Day and The Washington Post reports, it also is a big day and week for sending sums of money to corners all over the world, but especially Latin American countries.
Western Union routinely records a spike in the amount of money sent from the United States to the rest of the world. Latin America, including Mexico and the Caribbean, leads the way for most money received during this time. In Latino cultures, where motherhood is highly regarded, this should come as no surprise and is representative to the value we place on mothers in our cultures.
Whether you are physically close or far from family, we hope you can take a moment today to honor the mothers in your life.
And now, onto this week’s headlines.
Con poder,
Lyanne
Headlines to put on your radar.
Department of Justice appealing judge's ruling overturning ban on evictions: A court ruling this week came close to saying renters’ pay was due immediately when a federal judge overturned and soon after restored the moratorium on evictions.
This was a temporary overturning, as the Department of Justice appealed the decision. The decision, to be made in the next week would affect millions of people, renters as well as landlords.
HHS Secretary Xavier Becerra said on MSNBC : “I believe the president will want to try to correct this, or certainly continue the fight to make sure we don’t see Americans dispossessed and out on our he street, not at this time.”
📝Take note: the Census Bureau found last year that renters in communities of color are disproportionately at risk of losing homes. This is absolutely a story we will be following closely in the weeks to come.
Rising voices in business, fintech, entrepreneurship and beyond.
Redefining business news for people of color: This week we went back to our roots in journalism. We spoke with Kori Hale, who is CEO and co-founder of CultureBanx, redefining tech and business news for underrepresented communities using music.
Once an investment banker, Kori quickly developed an eye for news. She became the first Black woman to anchor a daily news show from the floor of the New York Stock Exchange, covering the intersection of business and culture. Yet, she knew there was a need for business news that covered Black and people of color specifically. Enter CultureBanx, a website covering business daily and redefining coverage for these communities.
This interview was also done for @meetlaprensa, a network of Latinx and POC journalists across the US. You can find them on YouTube as Meet La Prensa.
That’s the brief update for today! Until next week, catch us here on Moneda Moves.
