Headlines to put on your radar.
California Latinos are missing out on money from COVID rent relief 🏠: In California, state officials report that Latino residents are underrepresented among those applying for financial help. Through programming offered by the government, approved residents would get coverage for up to 80% in rent ranging from April 1, 2020 and March 31, 2021.
This financial assist could free applicants of thousands of dollars debt, and with 57% of the Latinx community in California being renters and more likely to spend a large portion of their income on rent in comparison to other groups, the community stands much to gain from the government’s offer. However, only 35% of applicants have identified as Latino. The Sacramento Bee reports on the matter.
Changing the face of the cannabis industry💰: As of today, most states have legalized marijuana on some level. Meanwhile, the 2021 U.S. cannabis market is valued at $33 billion. While the industry is overwhelmingly white today, this piece explores how people of color can stand to benefit from this growing market, expected to hit $84 billion in the next seven years. Currently, only 5.7% of founders are Latinx. The Black and and Asian representation for ownership is even lower.
We have a unique opportunity for people to do conscious capitalism," explained Felicia Carbajal, executive director at the Social Impact Center. "The more BIPOC, the more queer people we have participating, we can force the industry to shift and find some values."

How To Get America Back To Work 🎧: President Joe Biden called the $2.7 trillion American Jobs Plan “a once-in-a-generation investment in America...the largest American jobs investment since World War II.”
The details of the plan are still coming to light, but elements include childcare, paid family leave, investing in community college.
What will this plan and Biden’s administration’s plans at large mean for the Latinx community and how will the administration help get our communities back to work? We spoke with 35th U.S. Secretary of Commerce and CEO of re-skilling tech company EmPath Carlos Gutierrez in our most recent episode for his assessment.
A big shout-out to journalist-based group Meet La Prensa, a new YouTube channel spotlighting Latinx and reporters of color. This episode was done in partnership with them.
