💸Moneda Moves (52): In 2020, the Latino vote is louder than ever 🗳️
Welcome back Moneda Moves readers!
We're coming off a busy news and Super Tuesday week. Here's a few suggested reads to wrap up the week in a condensed version of today's notita:
The Latina pay gap by state and nationality💰: We've heard the stats: Latinas have to work on average twice as long as their white, non-Hispanic counterparts to make the same amount of money. But as Kara Perez writes for The Mujerista, this is a problem of layers. Did you know Colombians make more than Guatemalans in the United States? Or that New Jersey has the highest wage differential? It's a wide gap at $31,629 versus $74,524. She breaks down the wage gaps across Latinos and location, as well as the different factors that will help close it, and ones that go beyond personal actions.

In 2020, the Latino vote will be a force to be reckoned with
🗳️
: "Latino voters are poised to pick the Democratic nominee." That is how a piece from The New York Times opens on the Latino vote in light of the 2020 election. While written ahead of Super Tuesday, the theme of the story is evergreen -- Latinos are expected to be the largest nonwhite voting segment this year, but that does not mean they are a monolith. For instance, working class and younger Latinos have been documented to support Senator Bernie Sanders, but as the report notes, there are also plenty others in search of a more moderate candidate.
“What used to happen was you avoided talking about Latinos until Florida,” Mayra Macías, executive director of Latino Victory Fund told The New York . “Now we are seeing that there is no path to victory without speaking holistically to them.”
In the months that follow, we will learn more about what matters to Latinos who are voting as candidates make their investments in this community, which will certainly have its voice heard in this election cycle.
Con poder✊🏽,
Lyanne
